Safari and travel to Africa - the great adventure

Africa is a dream destination and a continent that consistently manages to seduce and fascinate. It is home to some of the the greatest wildlife experiences one could imagine whilst its populations and cultures make an equally deep impression. Book your dream trip to Africa with KILROY!

Africa is without doubt one of those places that falls under the "Go before it's too late" category. A continent full of contrasts. From the rolling hills that can be recognised from the film "Out of Africa" or Hemingway's novel "Green Hills of Africa", to the massive desert that fills almost the entire northern part of the continent. Jungles filled with rare and exotic breeds of birds and wildlife, and beautiful beaches that also offer opportunities for some great SCUBA diving. The majestic Mount Kilimanjaro and of course the enormous savannahs where one can get up close and personal with the wildlife or watch the nomadic tribesmen driving their cattle across the open plains.

Highlights in Africa

There are so many highpoints about a trip to Africa it would be impossible to name them all, and where to start is dependent on personal taste or interests.

If it is the chance to see some amazing wildlife that is of greatest interest, then a safari in Africa will be a great experience. The Masai Mara (Kenya), Serengeti (Tanzania), Botswana or the Krüger National Park (South Africa), is highly recommended. Here you have the best chance to see the African savannahs "Big Five" - lions, African elephants, Cape Buffalos, leopards and rhinoceros. You'll also get chance to see giraffes, zebras, crocodiles, gnu's (wildebeest), antelopes and much more.

One could also climb to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, or do some world class diving off the coast of Zanzibar or Mozambique, which also offers some great beaches. Maybe you could combine your travel with some voluntary work, a great way to really get to know Africa

Regardless of what your tastes may be, no trip to Africa would be complete without a trip to the 100m high waterfalls at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe

Let us not forget the pyramids of Egypt, the exotic smells of the markets of Marrakech in Morocco, or the impressive dunes of the Sahara desert. Try a camel ride through the world's largest desert in Morocco, Egypt or one of the other countries, which it encroaches into.

BUT there is so much more to experience in a trip to Africa. An insider tip is Uganda, in the darkest corner of Africa. Here you can be fascinated by the rain forests whilst you try and spot one of the countries indigenous mountain gorillas.

Travelling to and around Africa

Many European airlines offer cheap flights to Africa. Make it your destination or a stop on a round the world trip; stay for 2 weeks or 4 months - Africa won't disappoint you!

A good way of getting around this huge and fantastic continent is a tailor made adventure tour. See the many scenic highlights, amazing wildlife and meet the friendly locals. You travel by bus or purpose-built trucks that are designed to also go off the beaten track. Meet other young people and make friends for life while traveling through Africa. In South Africa, we even offer a flexible bus pass to use on the extensive hop-on/hop-off network. Trains though are much less reliable. For greater flexibility and freedom in areas such as South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and to a lesser extent Egypt, it is recommended that you rent a car and drive yourself.

Accommodation in Africa

Many countries in Africa have very good hotels and the choice is getting better as more and more good hotels appear over large parts of the continent. South Africa is famous for its great bed & breakfasts - they are not especially cheap but give a great opportunity to meet some of the local inhabitants. Kenya and Tanzania's coastal and seaside resorts have loads of different beach hotels and bungalows. One must of course try sleeping in a tent whilst on safari - otherwise you haven't really been to Africa.

Price levels in Africa

Eating out and nightlife is generally cheap. In many of the cheaper countries you can live for as little as  €10 per day, but expect to use a little more in South Africa.
