If you like heat, then you will find yourself comfortable in Djibouti. It is one of the hottest and driest places on earth. Looking at the weather forecasts for the month of July, the average maximum temperature is around 41 degrees. Sunscreen and a water bottle are therefore two good things to carry in your backpack when you travel around in Djibouti.
For nearly 80 years, Djibouti was a French colony until the country gained independence in 1977. Djibouti and France still maintain close ties.
Djibouti lies in northeast Africa at the entrance to the Red Sea from the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. It borders Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. On the other side of the bay, you can find Yemen. Although Djibouti is not as famous as its neighbors, the country has its own unique experiences to offer.
Red Sea coral reefs contain several hundred different corals, and provides habitat for a very rich wildlife. For example you can find barracuda, snapper, rays and large animals like whale sharks, grey sharks and dolphins. Snorkeling and diving are very obvious activities if you stay on the coast.
Along the coast you will find the capital of Djibouti, which has the same name as the country. The city is a vibrant, cosmopolitan place and composed in its own special way with Arabic, European and African influences.
If you want a night out in town, the capital offers many colorful restaurants and a great nightlife. The infrastructure is good, so it's no problem to get around, but you must spend your money carefully because Djibouti is not a cheap city.
Djibouti also offers exciting sights inland. Here you can find Africa's lowest point - the salty Lake Assal. In this lake the water table lies 156 meters below sea level. Near the lake you can find a hot spring which runs off of a volcanic rock, forming a pool beneath. The water here is so hot that you could even cook a fish in it!
