Travel to Lombok - tropical adventure island

The Indonesian island Lombok is the perfect place for those wanting to escape from the busy everyday life. If you visit Bali and want to experience something even more peaceful, it is fairly easy getting to Lombok where everything happens at a much slower pace and the nature is breath-taking. All in all, Lombok is dead beautiful!

Slow down just a bit

This island is less developed than it’s neighbour Bali but it has better beaches, a bigger volcano, and a more varied landscape. Tourists are fewer and most of them are independent backpackers, drawn by the intoxicating diving, snorkelling, hiking and surfing spots. From Gili Tranwangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno you’ll find some thrilling diving resorts and a wild beachfront!

The Senggigi is more touristic and the beach is not so special. However, Senggigi has all the supermarkets, banks and restaurants that you need. Local markets and villages are worth exploring. Visit the Senaru and Segenter villages and quiet wild beaches of Kuta on the south shore. Here you also find some great spots for surfing.

For those interested in culture, Pura Lingsar is a great temple dating back to some hundreds of years. Here you can see some Balinese Hindu culture as well as Lombok´s indigenous culture. In December, the temple area fills with colourful religious celebrations of Perang Topat.

Islands East of Lombok

The Islands Komodo and Rinca are just east of Lombok. Here, you can see the legendary Komodo dragons, huge lizards 3-4 meters of length, the only place to see these monsters! Flores: relaxing island with lots of countryside villages and beautiful coastline.

Activities

There are many excellent dive sites near Lombok, most around the Gili islands but also in the Southern part of the island, Blongas Bay, where you can see hammerheads and rays. The rich marine life of the coral reef is simply fantastic – also for snorkelers. Dive courses available too and sites for all experience levels. Liveaboard sailing trip for several nights is a great way to use your time and money.

Surf spots are found in Kuta beaches, which is good area for swimming as well.

Gunung Rinjani Trek is an adventure! The rim of the majestic still active volcano Rinjani is a beautiful site. The trek takes about 8 hours of sweaty walking, but you won’t forget it. Spend a night under the stars if you have a chance. The crater lake is nice too.

Moving around

Ferries operate between Lembar and Padagbai (Bali). There’s also a ferry connection to Sumbawa. If you want to head to Gili Islands, take a boat ride e.g. from Sengigi. You can also fly.

While moving around in Lombok, use the public mini buses called bemos. They take you all over the island. If you want the ultimate freedom, rent a motorbike or a car. The prices won’t kill you.
