Austria is the mecca for outdoor enthusiasts as well as opera lovers and people interested in history. Find yourself in the cultural heart of Europe which also happens to be geographically in the center of the European continent.
There are many things to see and do in Austria. Stroll around the quaint, historic towns - like the capital Vienna and Salzburg, but also the many small and charming towns. Go skiing in the Alps in winter or go hiking in and look at the beautiful flowers in the same Alps in the summer.
Remember to take the bus from Zell am See to the nearly 400-meter-high Krimml waterfalls which is a beautiful sight. Go exploring in Tyrol with beautiful mountains and extraordinarily charming villages in the background. Don't forget a trip to the opera, the beautiful museums or perhaps the simplest of all pleasures: eating sweet cake in one of the many irresistible pastry shops.
Vienna is one of the prettiest and nicest cities in Europe, perhaps the world. A stylish and well-maintained city with lots of culture and class. Here you will find impressive Baroque architecture, world-class museums, churches and art galleries that can take your breath away. The city's cultural heritage really shines through, especially in the old center, which is located on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Vienna is also the perfect place to go to the opera, but the city also offers plenty of opportunities for party people. You'll find good, lively nightclubs and cozy wine bars all over. Remember to visit the castle Schönbrun, which is one of the most beautiful places in Vienna. And do not forget to taste a wienerschitzel when you are here - they're actually much better than most people think!
Salzburg is Austria's fourth largest city and also one of the prettiest and friendliest; full of lovely squares and streets, Baroque churches and extremely delicious chocolate! This wonderful city is best known as the birthplace of Mozart, and you can see the house where the famous composer grew up in Altstadt. There are many incredible sights in Alstadt, which is an area in Salzburg. Visit the castle Hohensalzburg Fortress for example. The view from the top of the fortress is really beautiful. Salzburg is especially worth a visit in the summer, in July and August, where there is a lot of music festivals. However, Christmas is a good time to visit when the city is decorated beautifully for the holidays and especially Domplatz attracts a lot of visitors with its annual Christmas market.
For the active traveller, it is especially skiing and hiking that excel in Austria. You can also cycle along the beautiful river Danube from Pasau to Vienna, or sail in canoes on another famous river Inn.
For hikers, Zell am See is a gem with the beautiful and crystal clear blue lake and stunning mountain scenery. Here you will find many good hiking trails in summer.
A hike to the small village of Partenen in Montafon valley is recommended. 4,000 steps made more than 300 years ago lead to great views - a steep walk, but certainly worth the effort. The safety is good when you want to hike in the Alps - the paths are well marked and there are plenty of cabins to stay in along the way. For skiers there are plenty of opportunities; Innsbruck, Tyrol and Kaprun/Zell am See are just some of the great places - not forgetting St. Anton, who is as famous for its festive après ski.
