Travels to Micronesia - thousands of small islands in the Pacific Ocean

Blue waves, white beaches, swaying palm trees, and brilliant sun. On the small and exotic islands in Micronesia, is it not at all difficult to find perfect postcard images. If you also have a penchant for flippers, coral reefs, and colorful fish, Micronesia will make the perfect setting for an amazing trip.

Micronesia is both a state and a territory in the Pacific. The Federated States Of Micronesia are divided into four small statescalledf Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk and, Yap. The whole area of Micronesia, which consists of more than 2,000 islands, is spread over a huge area of nine million square kilometers. Besides the Federated States of Micronesia, the area also includes the island states Guam, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Northern Mariana Islands, and Palau. Most of the islands are very small and the total land area is no more than 3,105 square kilometers.

With about 2,000 islands, there is not a single homogeneous culture. There are a lot of small communities each with their own identity and character, so life on the islands is very diverse. Therefore, we recommend that you do some research on Micronesia to learn about the character of each destination before you decide where to go.

Close ties to the US

Historically, Micronesia has been marked by successive colonial powers that have been present on the islands. Among others the Germans, Japanese, and Americans have all had a colonial presence. However, most of the islands are now independent but with close ties to the US.

Put on the bikini

It was in Micronesia that the Americans carried out nuclear tests in the postwar years, for example at the Bikini Atoll in the state of the Marshall Islands. There are still remnants of the USS Saratogan on the seabed off the island. This aircraft carrier wreck is reportedly the only one in the world that can be explored with regular sport diving equipment. The Bikini Atoll is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List because it represents the beginning of the nuclear age. Furthermore, it is known for giving its name to the popular two-piece swimsuit.
