Buenos Aires - The Sensual City

Buenos Aires is the cosmopolitan capital of Argentina and one of the nicest cities in South America. Lots of immigrants from back in the day have given this city its unique, European vibe. It’s a great place to start your journey and get used to the Latin pace of life. This makes it a great place to start your trip through Argentina.

Buenos Aires is a huge city, but because of the many different “barrios” (neighbourhoods), each with its own distinctive atmosphere and character, it feels like you are walking from village to village. You can do most of the interesting parts by foot. Or just take a taxi – they are ridiculously cheap!

San Telmo and Palermo

San Telmo, with its beautiful historical buildings, shows you a “statige” side of the city. It’s also the place to be if you want to learn or enjoy a true Tango. It’s one of the things the city is famous for and you simply cannot leave Buenos Aires without having experienced this passionate dance (even if you hate dancing).

Palermo must be the coolest place to be in Buenos Aires. With its laid-back atmosphere, many trendy boutiques and restaurants, plaza’s and cute hotels it’s definitely a treat be as a backpacker. We recommend staying here in a hostel or hotel for at least a few days.

La Boca and Maradonna

Probably one the most popular neighbourhoods in Buenos Aires is “La Boca”. Famous for it’s coloured houses, which are a true tourist magnet. Although it’s nice to stroll around through some of the streets, it is a major tourist hotspot. So don’t be surprised if you find a few busses with American or Japanese people there. Also, keep in mind that Boca is a poor neighbourhood and with that, not too safe outside the tourist areas.

Are you a soccer nut?

Than go see the most famous team in Argentina: Boca Juniors, home of Argentinean star Maradona. It’s an amazing experience to be there during a match. You can feel the massive concrete stadium tremble when thousands of fans scream “Bocaaaa, Bocaaaaa”. Take our advice and book a ticket with a booking office or at your hostel. They will take you to and from the stadium, which is much safer than going by yourself (good luck finding a cab that will take you home).

Other great sights in Buenos Aires

There is so much to see and do in Buenos Aires, but you should try to fit a few things in your schedule, apart from the above. Visit the grave of Eva Perron at the cemetery in La Recoleta. Walk along the widest street in the world. Visit the harbour Puerto Madero and chill out in one of it's great hangout spots along the boulevard.

Also, when you’re at the harbour, book a 2-day trip to Uruguay, just across the water. Not too expensive and worth it.

Experience Argentina

Buenos Aires is a vibrant city with lots to see and do. Mind that, although it’s a great starting point in Argentina, it’s a different experience from the rest of the country. So don’t think that by having visited Buenos Aires, that you have seen and experienced Argentina. But hey, that’s just a good excuse for extending your trip and explore the rest of the country.
