What is summer camp in the US?

Picture it: horseback riding, climbing, and sailing all in the same day. Staying up late telling ghost stories with kids by the campfire. Hiking to a private lake nestled in the woods...

Each year, hundreds of thousands of kids ages five to 17 attend summer camp at the thousands of camps located in rural areas across the U.S. The specific activities may vary from camp to camp, but an atmosphere of fun, friendship, and discovery stays the same. Whether the campers attend for one week or eight, campers and counselors alike have the chance to try new activities each day, learn important skills individually and as a group, and make friendships that last a lifetime.

Camp life

A typical camp day starts between 7:00 and 8:00 with breakfast and as a camp counselor you will join the kids at the tables. This is where general announcements are made and the plans for the day presented. During the next hours you will help and be responsible for various activities, usually in periods of 1 hour per activity. This could be a specific activity or in general. Lunch is the next thing on the agenda followed by a rest period. Afternoon activities usually run 3-4 hours before a much anticipated evening dinner. Evening activities are common and a lot of fun. Good-night time is around 21:00. You may think this is early, but you'll need a good night’s sleep to be able to do it all again the next day.
