Buda and Pest

The river Danube flows through Budapest and divide it naturally into the two districts of Buda and Pest. Buda is the historical part, Pest is the modern part. Overall, Budapest is an interesting mix of old and new, modern and traditional, western and eastern. Budapest also offers a number of islands and nine bridges crossing the Danube river. All this helps to make the city even more charming and beautiful.

The well-preserved Budapest

The main attractions of Budapest is Castle Hill and Andrássy út, and both are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Castle Hill in the Buda district is one of the biggest attractions in Budapest, not only thanks to the beautiful views, but equally because of a number of cultural gems from the Middle Ages, primarily the Royal Palace. Buda Castle is interesting and beautiful, and you should also visit the impressive Hungarian State Opera House in the Andrássy út area.

Another highlight of Budapest is Gellért Hill, located beside the River Danube. This is the city's highest point and you get rewarded with a magnificent view of the city. You will also find the Citadel fort and The Liberation Monument from the end of World War II.

Hungary and Budapest is filled with lovely spas. On a low budget you can bathe in the lovely, warm waters in beautiful outdoor settings, many places surrounded by old palaces and historic buildings.

Islands with recreation and entertainment

There are two main attractions on Budapest's seven islands in the river Danube: Margitsziget and Hajógyári-sziget (sziget means island in Hungarian). At Margit, there are swimming pools, a water park, raceways, good bike paths and good parties at the clubs with open-air terraces. The island Hajógyári offers plenty of activities such as jet-skiing and wakeboarding in the water during the day and drinks and parties in the evening at one of the popular nightclubs. The famous Sziget Music Festival is held every year with music artists from around the world. Also the rest of the year there are various forms of entertainment and live performances of various kinds, so this vibrant island is always worth a visit.

Hungarian cuisine in Budapest

You have to try to taste the local and spicy goulash, the good fish soups and the popular sweet wine Tokaji Aszú that are produced locally. Generally, Hungarians love beer, so it is not difficult to find a party.

Nightlife and live music

The Hungarians are fond of beer and celebrations, which is evident from Budapest's good and entertaining nightlife. Go bar-hopping between the good places, such as Buddha Beach and Retro Beach, and on the other side of the river (on the Buda side) you should try Zöld Pardon, Café del Rio, and A38. Generally, you will find most bars in Pest, especially on street Váci utca.
