Travelling to North America - The ultimate road trip!

As travel destinations go, few come more highly recommended than North America. An enormous continent comprising the USA, Canada and Mexico, that offers everything you could wish for. Mountains, deserts, tropical beauty, arctic adventures, impressive coastlines and not to forget some of the worlds most amazing cities. Travel to North America with KILROY!

One could start in the USA's, if not the world's, number one city - New York with its incomparable atmosphere. Start the day with breakfast at a classic American diner. Shop-till-you-drop for high fashion on Fifth Avenue; or find yourself a bargain in one of the second hand shops on the side streets. Feast on one of NYC's juicy steaks or burgers followed by one of their world famous cheesecakes. Be seduced by the sultry sounds in one of the many jazz clubs. Hang out in Central Park or the eternally charming Greenwich Village. Visit one of the many world famous sites - the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge or Empire State Building. The list of possibilities is almost endless.

Road trip in North America

Alternatively you could rent a car, plug in your iPod loaded with some suitably cool driving tunes and take a road trip around the famous "Western Triangle". Start in San Francisco by exploring the famous steep streets and Chinatown (one of the largest and oldest Chinese communities outside of Asia). Take a boat trip over to the infamous Alcatraz and gaze in wonder at the sheer size of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Then cruise south along Highway 101 in true west coast style to Los Angeles and the nearby Tinseltown a.k.a. Hollywood. En route make sure to stop and look out over the dark blue waters of the Pacific Ocean as waves crash onto the rugged coastline. Once you have had your fill of L.A. head west through the desert until the blinking neon lights of Las Vegas appear on the horizon. This road trip certainly has a bit of everything and the world's number one gambling town is not to be missed! Whether you make your fortune here or not, you must not pass up the opportunity of taking the relatively short trip (by American standards) to the Grand Canyon, its sheer size and immensity will blow your mind! Complete the "triangle" by heading back towards San Francisco to visit the breathtaking natural beauty of Yosemite National Park.

On a trip to the USA you could also find yourself tempted by the beautiful New England region in the northeast; the charm of the southern states; or the impressive grandeur and incomparable "hillbilly" atmosphere of the mid-west.

Skis or a surfboard?

Both Canada and the USA offer fantastic mountains and ski areas. British Columbia in Canada, in fact the Rocky Mountains region as a whole, offers fantastic powder snow and immaculate pistes that literally welcome you to throw yourself down them. Try out Whistler, Fernie, Lake Louise, the National Parks of Banff and Jasper, or some of the smaller resorts like Big White and Kicking Horse.

A trip to Canada also offers huge, unending prairies, the incredible natural beauty of Quebec, or exciting cities such as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Once you start you'll soon realise that you'll never be finished exploring this wonderful country.

In the southern-most part of this North American travel-trilogy, Mexico, you'll find turquoise waters with waves that are simply perfect for surfing, especially on the Pacific coast. On the eastern coast of the Yucatan peninsula the Caribbean Sea offers one beautiful bathing beach after another. Between these two amazing coastlines you can pretend to be Indiana Jones whilst exploring the ancient Mayan culture amongst the ruins and pyramids, eat more than you should of the delicious (and authentic) Mexican food, or take a dip in one of the many irresistibly idyllic waterfalls or pools. Alternatively you could lose yourself in one of the beautiful colonial towns, go on a shopping spree in one of the fantastic markets, or let yourself be seduced by one of the World's largest and most hectic cities, Mexico City.

Travelling to and around North America

Ask your KILROY travel consultant about the possibilities of putting together a flight itinerary with a number of stops en-route - a big advantage in such a large continent where you don't have the time, or desire, to cover the whole distance by land. KILROY can help you put together an itinerary including a number of stops that costs little more than a return airfare to Los Angeles!

The ultimate way to experience the USA and Canada though is by road. Rent a car through KILROY and with Jack Kerouac's world-renowned book "On the Road" as inspiration, explore what these two countries have to offer on 4-wheels. Alternatively rent a motorhome and save money on overnight accommodation en-route!

Another great way of travelling around North America is to book an adventure tour through KILROY that will take you places you otherwise may never have seen. It will also give you a deeper insight into the country from one of the knowledgeable guides, something you won't necessarily find in a guidebook. It's also a great way to meet people and make new friends.

Accommodation in North America

As a general rule, accommodation is relatively expensive in North America, so it's a good idea to get advice from KILROY before you travel. We know the best and cheapest places to stay, as well as some of the not so cheap. Possibly more importantly we know which areas to stay in and which ones to avoid! We can of course help with booking hostels, hotels and motels throughout North America - whatever your taste or budget permits!

Price levels in North America

Prices are generally a little lower than in Europe, with the exception of New York, which is one of the most expensive cities on Earth! Once out of the big cities in Canada or the USA, it's possible to live on about €40-50 a day - if one tightens one's belt a little! Many motels have double rooms that are comfortably big enough for 4 people - so if you can travel in a group of four and rent a car there is definitely money to save on both transport and accommodation. Don't worry about food, it is generally cheap and comes in huge portions - often enough to share!

You should of course budget for some extra expenses especially money for shopping, which is an almost unavoidable, but not always cheap, part of a trip around North America. There is of course "money to save" as many clothes and electronic goods are much cheaper here than at home, especially in one of the large outlet centres that can be found around the USA and Canada.

In Mexico everything is cheaper - full stop! You can live for around €20-25 a day if you avoid the major tourist traps. We recommend of course setting your budget a little higher so you can enjoy the many, exciting activities that are on offer in Mexico and its northern neighbours.
