Explore the secrets of Mexico City that are unknown to the great public. Enjoy the crowds relaxing in Chapultepec Park and learn about the city’s extensive history.

In one of the largest cities of the world you won’t get bored easily. With more than 20 million inhabitants, Mexico City is home of many churches, cathedrals and museums. It has many historical (Aztec) sites and is home of the last build Volkswagen Beatle, which explains the bug invasion of the streets. In the enormous Chapultepec Park you can enjoy yourself for days. If you plan to walk around the city keep in mind that the smog and the high altitude (2240 meters above sea level) can exhaust you easily.

Overview of Mexico City

Walking around

Go to the Zócalo neighbourhood and visit the Templo Mayor. It might be a little crowded, but it’s worth visiting. Better preserved and as impressive are the National Palace and the Spanish Cathedral. For a piece of fine art, go to the Coyoácan or San Ángel neighbourhoods. If you’re lucky you catch a bunch of people dancing on Plaza del Danson. Young and old are mixed, both in full dress. Don’t be shy, pick your best clothes and mingle with the locals!

Unfortunately Mexico City is well-known for its high crime numbers. Therefore it is wise to be cautious. However, if you avoid notorious neighbourhoods, you will probably feel safe. Your life will be more at stake when joining the traffic. Mexicans don’t apply any rules. Be prepared and make sure your horn works!

Chapultepec Park

Being the largest city-park in the world, many locals gather at Chapultepec Park daily. However, this area also tells a vast part of Mexico’s history, going back all the way to the 4th century AD. There are 7 museums located in this area, under which is the former Palace. You will easily lose yourself here for days.

Ancient Cultures

In and around the city you find many fascinating cultural heritage sites from different ancient cultures. Only one hour away from the city centre, you have to visit the pyramids of Teotihuacan. Walk between the remains of sacred buildings and feel how gods were worshipped and sacrifices were made in ancient times.

Sports

The city hosts a few of the soccer clubs in the national league. Watching a game of locally rivals such as Club América and Atlante playing against each other is a must, even if you don’t like soccer. The ambiance in Estadio Azteca – with over 110.000 seats one of the biggest stadiums in the world - is overwhelming.

Outside Mexico City

If you are tired of the smog and heavy traffic, then go a little outside Mexico City to find some tranquillity. Located on a hilltop near a big lake, the colonial town Valle de Bravo offers an oasis of peace. Its cobblestone streets and extensive pine forests make this place comfortable for spending some days or weeks. More historically sound is a visit to Querétaro or San Miguel de Allende, where culture plays the leading role.
