A road trip from north to south in New Zealand includes amazing mountain ranges, glaciers and heaps of possibilities for active adventures and adrenaline rushes. If you are a fan of Lord of the Rings you can expect to get a daily dose of the Mordor landscape while road tripping through New Zealand.

Auckland, 1-3 days

A vibrant city of harbours, beaches and islands, Auckland is known as the "City of Sails".

Waiheke Island

Enjoy fine food and wine on this sun-soaked piece of paradise, only a 30min ferry ride from downtown Auckland. Waiheke Island is known for its award-winning vineyards and white-sand beaches and is one of the gems of Auckland's harbour.

West Coast beaches

Journey through the rainforest of West Auckland and you'll find rugged, beautiful coastline. Explore black sand beaches and native forests with one of the many picturesque walking tracks on offer. 

Hobbiton Movie Set, 1/2 day

Take a guided tour. Hobbiton Movie Set is an enchanting community of life-sized Hobbit holes in the Hamilton - Waikato region, and is the first stop in The Trilogy - a Middle-earth themed package that includes the Hobbiton Movie Set, Waitomo Caves and Rotorua.  Enjoy a guided tour around Hobbiton, where your knowledgeable guide will enlighten you about the history and the on-location filming processes. Stop for a handle of ale at the brand-new Green Dragon Pub or grab a light lunch at the Shire's Rest Café. Nearby filming location: The Shire, Hobbiton  

Waitomo Caves, ½-1 day

Underground caves and glow worms. An hours' drive from Hobbiton lies the Waitomo Caves, a fascinating labyrinth of underground sinkholes, caves and rivers beneath rolling green farmland. Take a walking or boat tour, try black water rafting or zip line through the darkness. Nearby filming location: Trollshaw Forest, Troll Hoarde Cave  

Rotorua, 1-2 days

Mud pools, geysers and adventure. Rotorua is one of the world's most lively fields of geothermal activity. Explore the bubbing mud pools and geysers of Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley, or get your adrenalin pumping with some of the great adventure activities on offer. Visit Te Puia to experience a Maori cultural and learn about the fascinating history of New Zealand's indigenous people.  

The Coromandel, 1-3 days

A coastal paradise. Cloaked in native rainforest with dazzling white sand beaches and picturesque coves, The Coromandel is a relaxed, laid-back coastal paradise. Take a guided sea kayak tour or relax in a warm pool Hot Water Beach. If you want to explore your own secret lagoon, kayak or paddle board to Donut Island - a small landmass off the coast of Whangamata with a secret lagoon and beach in its centre.

Ruapehu, 1-3 days

Hiking, skiing and horse trekking. Experience the desolate beauty of the diverse and beautiful lands of the central North Island. Hike the Tongariro Crossing, known as one of the best day walks in the world. Take a horse trek through lush native forests and plains, or, if you're here in winter, go skiing on Mount Ruapehu.

Wellington, 2-3 days

Movie production and a buzzing foodie scene. Located at the southernmost tip of the North Island, Wellington is home to Weta Workshop and the Weta Cave. Here, you can get a behind-the-scenes look at movie making magic in action and check out the nearby filming locations. Indulge in the city's buzzing food and wine scene, and enjoy a cable-car ride to the Kelburn lookout for expansive harbour views. Nearby filming locations: Nazgul, Rivendell, Isengard Gardens
